- Preceptors Some of the programs help with finding a preceptor while others require you to find yourself which can be difficult - Alum
- Well-rounded program to prepare you for practice UNMC's Psychiatric NP program is a great option for nurses to prepare to move into practice. There is flexibility to pursue either a Master's level degree or DNP. The faculty is knowledgeable, and many of them currently practice in the field. Prerequisites aside, the didactic and clinical curriculum is directed at improving your clinical assessment and prescribing skills. Additionally, having the school place students with preceptors is a HUGE value, as many other for-profit schools do not provide this level of support. Overall, UNMC is perfect for psych nurses looking to move into advanced practice. - Alum
- 2020 FNP Review UNMC like many other NP schools , does not assist with clinical placements even though they stated they would help with this. I had to find all of my own preceptors and when I was unable to do this I had to go through a paid preceptor finding service . Also I would say that NP schools overall are seriously lacking in many regards , UNMC being no exception. Yes the curriculum and required hours are standard nationwide but they are still inadequate. I would argue that clinical time needs to be longer. I would also argue classes like pharmacology should be a year long course rather than a semester. NP complain about not being taken seriously or not being allowed to practice at the top of their license , yet we do nothing to improve the quality of our education/training standards. - Alum
- FNP program at UNMC It took me 4 years for the FNP program part time. I worked full time in management for the first 2 years and then transitioned to a part time job as I got into clinical part of the program. I live in rural western Nebraska so I was 7 hours from the Omaha campus. I personally found my own preceptors with 2 hospitals in my area. Paperwork is self explanatory for preceptors and really had no problem getting a new provider into the system. Something that I did appreciate with this program compared to others is that each patient I saw in my different clinical rotations counted for me even if it wasn't my primary focus (i.e. if I was in my pediatric rotation, I could still see adult patients and it would count for my clinical hours) - Alum
- Great Experience I worked FT while obtaining my PMC - it was a lot to do but that was my choice. The instructors were helpful although I had been in the medical field for some time and I arranged all of my preceptors without their assistance - this could be difficult for others if they didn't have the same experience. Wish they would have given me more procedural and radiology experience throughout the program to work in an acute care setting. - Alum
