- rural medicine training ETSU excels at rural medicine training. having a Kellogg grant in the 1990's. They have a project EARTH that the public health offers. They have Appalachian Studies (with a medical anthropologist) that complements healthcare training. There is good coordination between these Colleges. The College has several Nurse Managed clinics in the region serving urban homeless and rural populations. The VAMC is across the street and is the VHA Center of Rural Medicine. There are multiple opportunities for training in the hospital, research in the hospital, and rural CBOC. - Alum
- Clinicals Did not have good clinical experiences. Seems I always ended up with preceptors who did not like having students and did not enjoy teaching. They were only with students basically because their employers were requiring them to; therefore, it made for bad clinical experiences where not much was learned. - Alum
- My program prepared me to be an NP. My program prepared me to be a confident NP and to become board certified. It was an on the ground in classroom program which suited me well. - Alum
- I worked part time. I worked part time and went to school full-time. I had a toddler at home and a baby on the way during my last semester. It was difficult living and working in a rural area to find placement for preceptorship. A lot of program is figuring it out on your own and independent studies. I paid for an individual prep program for boards that I felt taught me more than the two years I was in the program. For a degree such as this on the job training has been the most valuable - Alum
- The best school It was a struggle to find preceptors, my professor found me one where I live but everybody I found was through a past work relationship or a friend of a friend. My last semester time was of the essence and they gave me a list of people to try but my previous preceptor’s new contract and all that comes with that ended up coming through, so they were a big help. Other than that, the didactic part, the teachers were very supportive and my professor was supportive while I waited on a preceptor to do certain assignments. - Alum
