- Underwhelming program I was attending Ohio University's online FNP program during the height of COVID, so there was no in-person intensives. While I do believe this would have helped many student be more prepared, I feel like the entire online format for these types of programs underprepares students for working as a nurse practitioner. Luckily I worked in a large hospital system that made finding preceptors easy, but I imagine that many student had issues finding appropriate placements because no/minimal assistance was provided by OU. I also feel like many of the professors were underwhelming in their teaching style. - Alum
- Online NP Program I lived in Gainesville, Fl when I did the online program. Since UF saturated all the clinics with their NP students, it was incredibly difficult to find local preceptors. Ohio University did not provide any assistance in this process. The program itself was very fast paced with each class lasting only 7 weeks and little classroom instruction. We did a lot of reading textbooks and other resources and writing article reviews then responding to other classmate's reviews. I would not recommend doing an NP program online. I think I would have learned more in a classroom setting, but at the time online learning was the only option for me. I'm so thankful I pursued this degree, and I love working as an NP! - Alum
- Great experience Securing a preceptor was initially challenging, but once I found one, I was able to remain with the same site for all three semesters of my clinical training. My experience at Charak was truly rewarding—I was included in group therapy sessions, participate in medication management decisions, encouraged to provide input, and consistently engaged in post-session debriefs with my preceptor to reinforce learning. I was able to assimilate quickly and integrate clinical practice with my academic work seamlessly with the help of my Ohio University instructors. Although my preceptor often had late sessions and was sometimes unavailable until 12 PM, the overall experience was overwhelmingly positive. I did not pay for supervision until my final semester, which was reasonable. I’m grateful to Ohio University for the support and guidance they provided throughout the process. - Alum
- Preceptorship prepared me well for my own practice Finding a preceptor in my rural area was difficult. Luckily, I had a connection that lead me to my preceptor and was able to stay with her through all the clinicals. I heard others were not as lucky and had a really hard time. I learned a lot during my preceptorship that I have been able to carry on to my own practice. I felt I was well prepared for my certification exam. - Alum
- There are much better programs Ohio University was attractive to me because it is mostly online. You do have to go to campus twice during your education for orientation and then skills check-offs. The main issue I had was the lack of support and investment the professors had in the students. My experience was that all of the professors I had were professors for the extra money. They all had full-time careers outside the university as NPs, so they were unavailable most of the week. At the start of every term, the professors would give you a syllabus, and either in the syllabus or in a separate email, the professor would notoriously explain that they had "office hours of 'xyzzy" because they had a full-time job and a family. The hours generally were for 2-4 hours once a week. They would explain that if you had any questions about an assignment or a topic, you could only expect them to respond to said question during that time. So, their answer HAD to be adequate. You basically teach yourself with youtube videos. - Alum
