10 reviews collected from current residents and alumni.- Winston-Salem State Great value program. I was able to work PT while in the MSN-FNP program. You do have to find your own preceptors, but as you progress through the program and network, this becomes easier. They prepared me well for my certification exam and practice. - Alum
- Great in person option for FNP I enjoyed my time at WSSU. I wanted to attend classes in person as opposed to the on-line virtual degree. The instructors care and want you to succeed. The course work is manageable and the PT option allowed me to continue working as a RN while obtaining my degree. Cons: 1. You are required to find your 4 clinical rotation sites, but the director has multiple associations and can assist you if needed. 2. Their administration is fair at best. Lots of headaches processing through the system from the application process, registration, tuition payment etc. All in all, this HBCU offers a great education at a fantastic value. (I now make well over 6 figures and this degree cost me less than $20,000.) - Alum
- WSSU-FNP I had a great experience until Covid. I preferred a program that was in person, but with Covid, the school had no choice but to transition to virtual. This also reduced my number of clinical hours and exposure to patients. Prior to Covid I felt the didactic was great and labs were very helpful for practice. I struggled a little with the virtual learning experience, partly because they were developing the virtual experience as we went along. I was fortunate to find a preceptor that I was able to stay with most of my program, I only needed to find a pediatric preceptor. Unfortunately with reduced exposure, I did not build confidence in practice prior to starting my career. This may be a common feeling among graduates even without the reduced exposure. I was able to easily pass boards on my first attempt. Fortunately, I was blessed with great guidance once in practice on my own. My program was nearly free because WSSU applied for a grant on by half. - Alum
- Good education The education was great and I felt well prepared for my job, however, communication was a big issue. It was hard to get in contact with many instructors if not in class. - Alum
- WSSU review The program was what I needed to learn and prepare for certification. There were some really great professors that made it worth it but overall, the program is very unorganized. I wouldn't let this deter you if you're considering, just make sure you keep up with documentation and make copies of everything because something will get lost. Finding a preceptor without any help was awful and then being told one I found wouldn't qualify but once I fought the decision, they allowed it. Overall a decent value for the cost. - Alum
