- IUPUI remote learning experience My experience was at a blended program, with the didactic portion primarily done through Zoom type meetings with an instructor who was down in Indianapolis, with students at IU South Bend campus. The local SB professors aided us in finding local preceptor positions, and I knew some local NPs personally and asked them to precept me. While this remote learning was not ideal, it was adequate and all six students are still doing well in our NP roles. - Alum
- self guided The program is not the same as it was when I went through. We did a lot of self guided learning and had a strong group of NP students that worked together. We prepared ourselves for exam with study books. I was very lucky and was placed in a great clinic for my clinicals and would say the bulk of my learning came from that hands on experience. - Alum
- Preceptor placement was the biggest plus I did the program part-time, which I felt was a good pace and workload of two classes at a time. The first year was fluff classes that did not have much to do with the NP role. In our second year, we delved deeper into the core of the program, although much of it was self-taught, with occasional synchronous virtual classes. Despite this, I don't feel that the program adequately prepared me for the boards, and I found myself learning about conditions I had never heard of that were essential for the exam. The fact that they helped with clinical placement was worth its weight in gold. They encourage most students to try to get clinical placement at their place of employment since those students are given priority. IU has many connections with large hospital systems and all my clinics were with the clinics associated with the hospital that I worked at. Finally, I finished school with only $30k in debt. I even had a friend that paid out of pocket. - Alum
- Presceptor Good program, only downfall is to find your own preceptor which can be difficult, but otherwise this program helps a LOT with the DEA process and all the steps needed once you graduate. - Alum
- Inadequate Preparation for PMHNP This program, while providing a degree, critically failed in several essential areas necessary for successful transition into the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) role. Despite possessing five years of pre-program experience as a Psychiatric RN, I felt profoundly unprepared upon beginning the curriculum nine years ago. The most significant deficiency was the scarcity of comprehensive psychopharmacology instruction, which should be the foundational and primary essential for an advanced practice mental health provider. Furthermore, the lack of support in securing mandatory clinical placements (preceptors) and the complete absence of practical career guidance left me feeling abandoned and struggling to navigate the necessary steps to become a practitioner. Prospective students should be aware that the program may provide the academic structure but lacks the crucial practical and essential didactic support needed for competency in advanced practice. - Alum
