7 reviews collected from current residents and alumni.- Minnesota State Mankato Although it has been a long while since I attended this program 2000-2003, it was a great program, at least for me. They went above an beyond in the required clinic hours. The practical classes were taught by practicing NP’s at that time. I did have to spend a lot of time writing a thesis - though this was great for a better understanding the research process, I am not so sure it was helpful with my practical skills. This was also a time when a majority of courses were taught in brick and mortar atmosphere which I feel was more beneficial at leas for my way of learning. - Alum
- DIY Preceptorships I found my own local preceptors. Mankato's NP program is accessible to people not living in Mankato, but they don't have preceptor relationships in all communities. - Alum
- Frustrating There was too much emphasize on theory which we already had in our bachelor's programs and the use of "group projects" in this setting seemed inappropriate considering we were distance learns and in a Master's program; not high school. There was no help nor guidance in securing preceptorships, it was 100% on me; this was frustrating and time consuming. I did work full time during this, but it was exhausting, and I would have benefited if I could have reduced my hours at work but that was not an option. there needs to be education on things like reading xray's, applying splints, suturing and other procedures that are seen more and more in primary care than before; more information on lab interpretations would also be beneficial. - Alum
- Outstanding Program for Post-Masters DNP After working as an NP for several years, I became interested in my DNP program options. I wanted a program I could attend while working full-time. I was seeking a hybrid program with the convenience and flexibility of online learning, yet enough contact to learn directly from faculty and peers in the program and receive guidance, support, and build relationships. This program exceeded my expectations, and I highly recommend to other APRNs. - Past alumna - Alum
- Problems with NP education in general Too much focus on theory and not enough practical knowledge. I would have loved more time spent on imaging, suturing, procedures. I would have loved a more in depth A&P class and an anatomy lab. I had to secure my preceptors largely myself, and ended up with physicians the entire time- the physicians were incredible and I am so lucky to learn from them, but I did end up missing the NP in practice component. The workload itself was very high- I felt most of it was nitpicky busy work, with some threats to failing a class for issues with APA formatting which seems excessive. When I asked about the workload, particularly because it was advertised as a part time program, I was told that even though it is part time, it was still a full time work load. I ended up having to decrease my hours at work significantly and had difficulty paying my mortgage during school due to this unexpected change. - Alum
