10 reviews collected from current residents and alumni.- Good medical prep but not "real world" In general, very pleased with the program. One caveat: I was ill-prepared for the atmosphere of primary care. No discussion of billing, coding, dealing with insurance companies, 10-minute visits, dealing with drug seekers--basically all the things that are causing PCP's to quit with burnout. Unreal that one prof had us preparing multiple page care plans. I laugh now, when I look back on it. Professors should be working themselves, in real gnarly situations that their students will soon be facing, so their students are better prepared. - Alum
- Rigorous I was in an accelerated program, which meant that the workload was heavy and the expectations increased. USM found and arranged preceptorships for me, which I have since learned is a rarity in grad programs. - Alum
- Strong focus on psychodynamic psychotherapy My program had a focus on psychodynamic psychotherapy, which I appreciated at the time, but in retrospect, psychopharmacology and other modalities such as CBT were neglected. There was a steep learning curve in my first job in terms of psychopharmacology. At the time, we were placed with preceptors, but I understand that is no longer the case. - Alum
- Limited specialties for nurse practitioners I am a graduate of University of Maryland which offered 25 area of specialties as a nurse practitioner. USM offered 3 . Some required courses were outdated and not state of art . We were required to obtain our own preceptor without help from the school . Learning was done on my own while in school . But tuition was cheaper than other schools and I could get what I needed to pass my exams . - Alum
- I loved the program! I had a very positive experience at USM. The faculty members were supportive and the workload although very heavy at times, allowed me to keep up with a full- time job as a CCU RN while finishing my degree. - Alum
